My Contest Story

This a story I wrote for a writing contest:

Lost In The Wilderness
By Minh Ha Nguyen
As the sun began to sink deep into the ocean, Isabelle, Saige, Mckenna, and I

kept running deeper and deeper into the forest.” It’s getting dark. “I think we better
start preparing to stay here for the night.” Mckenna suggested. I sighed. We had no
choice.
Things weren’t so good around here. On the way home from school, a mysterious
creature lead us lost into this forest. “ I hope we get back home in time. I have a
dance show on Saturday!” Isabelle worried. “ Don’t worry, Isabelle. Today’s
Thursday so we have two days to get out of here in time for your dance show.” I
assured her. “And my gymnastics demonstration!” Mckenna reminded. “And the art
festival.” Saige added. I nodded. Plus, I also had something important on Saturday. I
was the lead horse-rider in the Book Fiesta, so I couldn’t miss out.
Saige began making a fire, while Mckenna and Isabelle set about building a
little forest hut. I decided to get some food and water for the group. So I set off,
deeper into the forest, in search of tasty treats and clean water. I found a few familiar
edible things. I collected apples, nuts, and berries. As I walked deeper into the forest,
I suddenly uncovered a part of the forest I had never seen before. I pushed the bushes
and tree branches to one side and gasped at the amazing sight. It was a green, grassy
lawn, complete with a lake, trees, and cheerful animals. The fish were making
splashes in the lake, while the squirrels happily munched on their nuts. It was a sight
to remember. I sat down near the lake and started catching some fish for the group’s
supper. I noticed a road leading to an end to the sign of nature. I peered through the
branches, my heart sinking like the sun sinking into the ocean. Unlike the grassy
field, I was shocked to see no trees, animals, or even grass in this bare-grounded
field. People were cutting down trees in the forest all over the world, destroying
animals’ habitats, careless about what they were doing. I knew I had to do something,
but what. I sighed. I gathered up and went back to our hut. I loved the complete
version of the hut. It was built out on a grassy field, under a canopy of trees. There
were four mattresses inside the hut, one for each, carefully weaved out of straw.
There were two wells outside for collecting water, a papyrus roof and holes outside
for the restrooms. Small oil lamps welcomingly hung by the walls and the grassy
doors, and baskets made of straw held food supply. We also used our clay pots we
made at school in art to store and serve food.
We cooked the tasty fish over the fire and munched on the delicious apples
and nuts. We stored leftovers in our clay pots. After supper, I cheerfully
asked, “ Who wants to go collect more food for breakfast with me?” “ Me!”
Isabelle raised her hand. “ Let’s go then!” I exclaimed.
On the way, Isabelle noticed, “ I’m glad we brought our backpacks with us.
There’s all sorts of useful things in them. Saige said she has a navigating app
on her phone, so we can use it to find our way home.” I was relieved,
knowing we wouldn’t be lost here forever. Then I remembered about the no-
animal-no-trees-no-grass-bare-grounded field. I began to pick up speed and
pace, and soon we got there. I showed Isabelle the grassy lawn, and the bare-
grounded field. “ I think we should do something about it” I told Isabelle.
“But what can we do? We’re just kids!” Isabelle pointed out. I sighed. Isabelle
was right. But I felt somewhere in my heart that I knew what to do. And I had
to find where. We quietly fished and picked berries, and then we returned to
the hut sad, disappointed, and discouraged. What are we going to do?
The next morning, Mckenna and Saige were up early, testing Saige’s
navigation app to get ready for the journey home. When Isabelle and I finally
woke up, we ate our delicious breakfast, a trail mix of berries, nuts, apples,
and some fish as a side dish, created and made by Saige. Then we packed our
bags, taking home the straw mattresses and baskets, the oil lamps, and our
kind-of-dirty clay pots. Then we were on our way, setting off north(according
to Saige’s navigation app). Along the way, we only took short breaks to eat
and go to the restrooms. Then we came to a crowd. They were planning to cut
down all the trees in this forest. I knew I had to do something. I couldn’t let
them do something so cruel to the animals’ habitats and the environment.
“Wait!” I shouted, rushing up to the stage, “I don’t think you should do this
because you’re endangering the animals humans depend on for survival.
You’re destroying the trees, which takes in carbon dioxide and produces
oxygen from the carbon dioxide. Humans are also using a lot of chemicals,
which actually also lead animals to extinct. One time the use of the pesticide
PPT, almost drove the bald eagle to extinction in North America. We have to
remember that we share this planet, along with all the other living things. It’s
been a big problem for the past decades, and you have to help us, because it’s
becoming a bigger problem today. Thank you.”
The crowd thought about what I said carefully and then they clapped. I was
very proud of myself. The crowd clapped even harder when I smiled and
thanked them so much for understanding and that I wished they wouldn’t cut
down the forest. I jumped down the stage and was about to run to my friends,
which were also clapping really hard, when a woman from the crowd rushed
up to me and said, “ Excuse me, miss but I was very impressed by what you
said. So I would like to give you something. Think of it as a prize, or award.”
“ A reward? That’s really kind of you, but no thank you, I like helping the
planet, and I shouldn’t get awards for doing what I like. But that’s really nice
of you, miss.” I refused. “No, I just want to thank you for the lovely speech.
Anyway, your prize is… four pets of your own!” the woman explained.
“Thank you so much!” I exclaimed. My four pets were: a horse, bunny,
Chihuahua, and a turtle. I gave each to a friend: The bunny to Mckenna, the
turtle to Saige, and the Chihuahua to Isabelle. I kept the horse. I said good-
bye to the crowd and slowly rode my horse home, still waving at the crowd,
until they were out of sight. Then I went home and continued my normal life,
but I never forgot, the day when I got lost in the wilderness, turned into a
saving-a-forest adventure in the end.

Ancient Chinese Social Organization

I'm back, and now I'm a civil servant and high-ranking official in charge of the imperial workshop, craftshop, and trading centre. I work for the government, help Empress 月天(Shreya) make decisions, and keep track of events happening in the village and civilization. Then one day, I met civil servant 才黄(Cai Huang(my friend Kai).), who told me his story about being a merchant for life and is the new assistant of the trading centre, and civil servant 下天(Summer(my friend Grace).), who is the brand-new assistant of the imperial workshop and craftshop. We instantly became great friends. I have a big, comfortable, and luxurious house, with lots of servants and guards. I have delicious food, beautiful jewellery made of jade, gold, and silver, and millions of outfits made of silk. My job is just basically to keep track of the imperial workshop, craftshop, and trading centre, and report to Empress 月天 daily. Everyday I wake up, eat breakfast, go to the imperial workshop, craftshop, and trading centre to work, and finally I go to the Royal Palace to report to Empress Shreya. My day ends when I go home. Then it starts all over again. I love my life and job as a civil servant.

Dear Diary, The Wall Is Killing Me

I am a scholar and I am building the Great Wall of China. I never thought I would be working on this thing. It all started when the First Emperor burned all my hardworked books. I only get enough food to stay alive, so I get like, one meal a day. Yes, I am a slave. I don't get paid for building this thing, so I'm part of something called slave labor. I worked all day and only get to rest a bit at night. I have to work in sun, rain, snow, or whatever the weather is. I don't get free time,(SO unfair!) and I DO NOT like working on the Great Wall. My family is back home, and I miss them so much. My friend died, and was buried inside the wall. She died because she caught the plague, and I miss her a lot. I was almost done for when a brick almost fell on my head. Now, you are gonna whip when you read this: when I was working on the wall, I could see children, teenagers, adults, elderly: people of all ages working on the wall. So, for me, I don't like working on the wall cause it's hard work, but I'm glad that no more of those big old Mongols will invade our country now. I have survived working on the Great Wall, and I survived to see the Great Wall again, completed, finished, and still standing to this very day.

American Girl

American Girl is an American series of dolls, movies, books, and characters. My favorite characters are Kanani, Mckenna, Isabelle, Saige. There are movies about Saige, Mckenna, and Isabelle. Isabelle, Kanani, Saige, and Mckenna, are Girls of the Year. I also like one Historical Character named Samantha. My friend Grace D. has the Isabelle doll, and I think I'm also getting one, but not Isabelle.

Features That Make Ancient Civilizations Successful

These are the features of a successful civilization:

Location: It needs to be in the right location to survive so they could defend themselves from neighboring enemies.

Social Organization: Civilizations need a strong government and strong leaders in order to be successful because it needs laws to keep people safe(and to avoid total-breakdown in society.). It's like how schools work. Schools have rules that protects everyone and keeps everyone safe. You wouldn't like it if anyone could walk down the hall and punch you in the face(Ouch!!), or walk down the cafeteria/canteen and steal your dessert!

Food Sources: You need some sort of food supply or source because then you could starve to death.

Education: You also need some sort of education and language so that it can be passed down from generation to generation and to communicate and learn.

Technology: Some civilizations died out quickly because they didn't have good technology(tools, weapons, new inventions, etc.).

4 other important features: Art, Architecture, Leisure, and Beliefs

Fun School Poems

These are some school poems I wrote:

Friends
By Minh Ha

People who are kind
Whom are sweet as honey
Whom I'll never trade
Ever, even for money

They make me laugh
Even when I'm sad
They make me smile
When I feel bad

We work together
On group projects
Like a bunch of ants
With no rejects

We might be different
With different names
But with friends around
We're all the same

The Teacher

By Bruce Lansky and Minh Ha

I forgot to do my homework
I better not tell you why
I knew I'd get a consequence
So I had to make a lie

I said I went out running
But he said you were with me
I said I had some chores to do
And he said I watched TV

I said I had to rest in bed
He said I was just fine
I said I didn't know where the stapler went
And he asked " Did you use mine?"

The teacher knows like all my lies
Which makes me really sad
It's really hard to fool the teacher
when the teacher is your dad

My Mum's the Librarian
By Minh Ha

My mum's the librarian
Now that's not very good
If you don't return a book,
She'll be furious, she would

My mum's the librarian
Now that's not very nice
She reports all your missing books
To the principal that's vice

My mum's the librarian
She's never liked groaning
She'll lock you in a cage
If she hears anyone moaning

My mum's the librarian
A fact that makes me shake
Oh gosh, I lost a library book
Oh gosh, for heaven's sake!

I'm Sick of Cookies!
By Kenn Nesbitt and Minh Ha

I'm sick of cookies!
That's it, cookies!
I feel like a little bird
Eating a bunch of nookies

I'm sick of cookies!
Cookies for lunch
I rather have something healthy
Like salad or bread to munch

I'm sick of cookies!
I say that with a might
My mum thinks it's healthy
That's not even right!

I'm sick of cookies!
Oh, for heaven sake!
I can't complain cause that's the only thing
My mum knows how to make

I Can't Wait for Summer!

I can't wait for summer!
It's 90 days away
It finally really comes the time
To sing and laugh and play

I can't wait for summer!
The day will finally come
It's time for me to do my thing
Like dance or draw or run

I can't wait for summer!
It's coming really near
When it's time to all go to the beach
A moment I'll never tear

I can't wait for summer!
It's coming soon, p-sam!
The only thing I'm worried about
Is my brand-new math exam!

Paul Cookson

Paul Cookson is an Essex person, adopted and taken up north to learn to speak properly. One of my favorite poems of his is Teachers because it tells you what teachers are good at and also it is really silly and funny. When I read it, I feel silly and happy. In his poems, he uses rhyme, rhythm, and repitition.

My Poem

This is a poem I wrote in class today:

Protected from snow
Protected from light
It's windows make
It shining bright

Has space for three
Has space for four
You think no space
But there's lots more

My works of art
Stand big and proud
On dirty walls
That bound to shroud

It's really messy
Everywhere there's foam
If you ask me why
It's really my home

Hope you liked it!

Archaeology

Today in class we pretended to be an archaeologist. An archaeologist is a person who studies archaeology, the study of ancient histories and cultures. What I like about being an archaeologist is that you get to spend time outdoors, digging up artifacts, or inside, trying to find out what the artifact or fossil is, what it's used for, what it's made of, and much more. Being an archaeologist is cool because you get to find out how ancient people 1,000 years ago lived like, and how their lives are different than ours. I look forward to learning more about the lives of people who live in ancient China. I also would like to learn about ancient Egypt, the Aztecs, the Maya, and ancient Greece because they seem interesting to know about.

My Spring Break

On my spring break,(which was 9 days long, counting the weekends)I went to Legoland Malaysia, in Nusajaya, Johor. We stayed in the Legoland Hotel, which was really close to Legoland. Each guest room is themed, and my room was Kingdom themed. We went to the water park first. I got hurt on one of the water slides, but it was pretty minor. Then I went to the theme park. My favourite ride(attraction) was The Dragon, which is basically a roller coaster with no loops. Overall, it was a pretty fun trip, and I'm glad to be home again.

Victory!

Today in class we did Mystery Skype. Mystery Skype is when a class Skype chats with another class and both classes try to find the school and location of their opponent. It's sort of like a competition to see who finds the place first. And guess what? We won!! It was like the best thing ever! My teacher, Mr. Morefield, said that maybe they lost because they didn't narrow the search down into one tiny place(And their second question was: Are you in Moscow? I mean like, seriously?! That's not even narrowing it down! That's just wasting their questions!). That class was in the Abu Dhabi American Community School in Abu Dhabi, The United Arab Emirates. These were all the rules:

1. You can only ask yes/no questions
2. You have 40 minutes to finish the task
3. Everybody has to have a job

The Worst Field Trip Ever!!!

On Wednesday, March 19, my class and I went to Klang River. It is a river that flows through Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Malaysia, and eventually goes into the Straits of Malacca. We were in groups of three, each with one parent volunteer. I was with my mum, and my friends Grace D. and Jessica. We and to record things about the river and rate it from 1-9. Here were my group's ratings:

Category 1: Land Use  : 9
Category 2: Rubbish    : 7
Category 3: Pipes and Drains  : 7
Category 4: Extra Structure  : 7
Category 5: Smell  : 9
Category 6: Water Conditions  : 9
Category 7: Vegetation  : 9
Category 8: Vertebrate Animal Life  : 9
Category 9: Water Movement  : 7

I hope you liked my report. Maybe you might visit Klang River someday!

How Does Pollution Happen?

Water pollution happens in lots of ways. It can happen through acid rain, soil leaking into the rivers, fertilizers and pesticides dripping into lakes, chemicals released into water by factories, and human and animal waste getting thrown into rivers and lakes. Factories is one thing. Factories use lots of water to cool down their machinery. When that water is released into the river, it's really hot. That makes the level of nutrients in the water increase. That means more vitamins, less oxygen. So animals in the water start to die. We must do everything we can to stop this because, we can't make water.

Water Pollution

Even though some people have lots of water, more than 1 billion people worldwide don't have access to clean, fresh water. People like that have to walk miles to get water. Unfortunately, the water which these people do get, which is from rivers and lakes, are full of germs and other unhealthy organisms. These people know that, but they have no choice. These kinds of people are likely to be very poor and can't afford fancy pipe systems inserted into their homes. It's hard to believe this, but every 20 seconds a person dies because of drinking the polluted water. People everywhere are now trying to help those in danger of drinking and using the polluted water. You might not realize it, but water pollution is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in the world everyday. People are trying to end this, because as they say, the problem was made by us, so the solution is going to be made by us too.

Reading Response Of Frindle: By Andrew Clements

A boy named Nicholas Allen(Nick), which is full of great ideas, invented a new word called frindle, to replace the word pen. He invented frindle while he was in fifth grade, when his teacher Mrs. Granger said that what words mean is decided by us, humans. He got the whole of fifth grade to say frindle instead of pen. Things started going haywire when Mrs. Granger started keeping kids in her classroom after school as a punishment for saying frindle instead of pen. By now, the country knows the word, and it is spreading. Nick goes on TV shows and becomes sort of a celebrity. The word is spreading all over the world, and there's nothing Nick can do to stop it.

I really liked this book, and I totally recommend it!

My Tips to Become A Better Writer

1. Put a snapshot(A sentence or two that describe a something/someone.) in your story to make your story better.
2. Use "show-don't tell"(describing instead of just telling) in your story to make it much better(and much longer.).
3. Use a variety of sentence starters to make your story more interesting.
4. It's always good to write about something you know(nonfiction), but remember to write some fiction too!
5. Good writers always revise and edit their stories and go through several drafts, so remember to do that too to have a great story(and don't worry if you have to go back and revise and edit several times; that's part of the writing process.)
6. Make sure to check for punctuation, and capitalisation errors while editing(remember to check factual errors when writing nonfiction.).
7. Keep your story(fiction or nonfiction) organized by having a pre-write(plan; flow map, bubble map, etc.)
8. Follow the writing process(pre-write, first draft, edit, revise,
final draft.).
9. Choose a seed story(a small moment), not a huge, watermelon story, to write about.
10. Make a good title that "winks at you" and interested the reader.

Water Usage

I use 27 liters of water a day and 9,873 liters in a year.

My family(four people) and I use 108 liters of water a day and 39,493 liters a year

Ways To Conserve Our Water

1. Keep a desk calendar to keep track of your water usage.
2. Use a hose nozzle that turns on and off when you wash your car to save water.
3. Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth to save water.
4. Keep a wrench in handy to fix leaky faucets.
5. Try to have a shower/bath under 5 minutes to save water.
